Zambia, Day 2

Some highlights from day 2 included a fantastic sunrise, great scenery on the bank of the mighty Zambesi, a good few tiger fish, a lunch on an island in the middle of the Zambesi River, a game drive where we were mock charged by a female Elephant, and another good dinner.

Helicopters are awesome

Last Sunday, the company I work for took us for a fun day out near the town of Parys, to an adventure lodge named 'Sunwa' (http://www.sunwa.co.za). We spent part of the day white water rafting on the Vaal River. It was well organised and quite fun, but the adrenaline junkie in me was definitely left wanting for more extreme activities. Fortunately, I got my fix in the form of a Vietnam War era Hughes helicopter a little later.

I'd been in a chopper many years ago when I was a kid, and remember it being a pleasant (the view I got of Iguacu falls from the air was amazing), if somewhat safe experience. Well, nothing prepared me for the 10 minute flip we took in what I now respect as a real tough war machine. Our pilot, a crop sprayer by trade, certainly knew a thing or two about low level flying and seemed to have the knack of totally freaking us all out (by pretending, for instance, to fly into the side of a mountain at high speed, pulling up just at the last moment, and then rolling the aircraft at a 90 angle to swoop down the hill) without allowing us to feel like we were in any real danger at any time.
I've been on quite a few roller coaster rides before, but this was definitely the most thrilling.
