I'm Speeding Up

Writing my Chinese homework still takes me AGES, but I'm definitely getting faster at it, as I'm finding I don't need to look up the stroke order for every character any more. Perhaps I'll be able to complete all my homework on time soon...

I Can Read This, and It's Funny

This is the first humorous Chinese that I've been able to read and understand. It's the name of a scooter shop, presumably. Literally translated, it means 'very scooter'. In Taiwan though, 'scooter' also has the informal meaning of 'irritating', meaning that this sign also means 'extremely annoying'. Clever name for a shop.

I Can Understand This

But unfortunately, I can only read about 10% of the characters. Nevertheless, it's definitely an improvement from a few months ago.

Date: 14 day 7 month 2009 year
Now it's: 8 point 45 minutes
Today my best friend wants to say goodbye, so we went to an amusement park. I had a lot of fun there, but I'm not too happy because my good friend will go to Singapore next month.

1 Month to Go!

Today is the first day of June. In exactly one month, I'll start formal Chinese classes at Dong Hai University, here in Taichung's Western District. In theory, my speaking and listening vocabulary is up to 900 or so Chinese words. However, my reading and writing is probably sitting at 50 or so. So, my big project now is to try to learn to read and write about 850 Chinese characters in one month. It's pretty much impossible, but even my most dismal attempt will at least be another step on the road towards practical fluency. Wish me luck!
